The direct line story is short but eventful. In less than two decades they've built an organisation of over 9,000 workers, offering six products to more than five million customers across the UK and in Europe.

The revolution starts here

On their first day - 2nd April 1985 - direct line became the number one UK insurance company to use the telephone as its main channel of communication. It was a revolutionary event. Out went the middlemen, the big commissions, the forms & the jargon. In came speed, simplicity and a common-sense human touch. But the revolution didn't end there. Next came claims by telephone… then the launch of home, travel & pet insurance, loans, mortgages and pensions… & the list goes on.

Growing up, but never growing old

Each month since 1985, the number of policies in force has risen, as has the range of products on offer. For example, by December 1993, direct line had become the UK's largest insurer of privately-owned motor vehicles; in October 1995, direct line opened our 1st Accident Management Centre in Wakefield; & in April 1999, direct line launched the 1st ever credit card to be applied for, and granted, over the telephone. Along with the organic growth came acquisitions. In 1999 direct line bought Green Flag, the UK's third largest roadside recovery service. In 2001 direct line acquired the German and Italian motoring insurance businesses of US insurance company, Allstate.

The red telephone makes its mark

January 1990 saw the first television adverts boasting the red telephone on wheels. This cheeky symbol of friendliness & honesty coming to the rescue of the British public has appeared on TV or radio somewhere in the UK almost every day since.
